I would so be there if I lived around those parts.

I attended one Star Trek event when a friend invited me. We had a good time and ended up attending an optional presentation where Leonard Nimoy showed some of his photography, talked about Star Trek, his life and etc. He didn't sing "If I had a Hammer" or "Ballad of Bilbo Baggins" but interesting none the less.

The Nimoy presentation cost extra and was optional and ended up being all of 10 to 12 people so he took questions and comments from everyone thru the whole thing. There were only a couple "OMG crazy fanboy!" questions and he handled them very well.
For a moment I was tempted to ask something silly relating to his music but I just couldn't work myself up to do it. I was enjoying his talk, and he has this sort of wise old grandpa aurora around him that was charming.
The best part was his story / reenactment of the origins of the Vulcan hand sign.

In my younger years I went to a few gaming cons that incorporated fantasy and science fictions fans, too. One year I dressed up as some sort of Viking/dwarf warrior (I was short) with the classic cow horned helmet, the other year in camoflauge as a Tech Level 8 forward observer with laser carbine.

one of the wierd things about the CDN being so high relative to the USD right now is that books which have printed prices in both USD and CDN, the CDN price is outrageously high comparatively.
buying books in canada sucked when i could look at the two prices, convert, and find out i was paying a 20-25% premium to be buying it in canada instead of waiting a week to buy it at home.

When I started going to Cons about 7 years ago, I found out that the word "SciFi" is a sure marker for mundandes, and the fen take great offense at it. SciFi is a perjorative. If you use it, it will cut into your sales. You may think this is stupid, and it is, but it's a fact, jack.

You're supposed to say "SF", as in "ess-eff". That can stand for science fiction or spectulative fiction or whatever you like. Just SF, like GNU standing for GNU in the recursive algorithm.

Europeans sometimes use it ironically (skiffy) or to show they don't give a shit about image.
Mainly it was all about making sure stupid journalists don't think you are a trekkie. I mean, there is clearly a difference between the fake ear wearing nutjobs and the people with large beards, lank unwashed hair and enormous multicolour waistcoats. (Hint. Only one of these groups is aware they are in costume).

I'm a big fan of costumes but that's because I'm a little shy and it gives me an excuse to act out of character.

Nobody takes it seriously. It's all a lot of fun and sometimes you'll get some hottie dressed as Evil Willow or seven of nine.

And for the good conventions, the autographs are just a perk. people go to these things to meet other fans.
